The Story
Purchase includes postcard signed by George Benson.
At a time when most living legends would step back, slow down, and bask in their royalties, thereâs a creative curiosity about George Benson that has kept the veteran jazzman active and forging ahead. âWeekend In Londonâ, a new live album set for release on November 13th through Provogue Records, brings Benson full circle. The 77-year-old estimates that almost a half-century has passed since he last performed at the fabled Ronnie Scottâs Jazz Club in London. This live recording, taken from Bensonâs historic return to the Soho club in 2019, is another chapter in the venueâs prestigious lore. Itâs a rare treat to find this megastar going nose-to-nose with the breathless 250 capacity club, since fans are used to seeing Benson an the big stages that befit his sky-high status. âI like that kind of intimacy,â says Benson. âI can feel the love when itâs up close and personal.â âIt was very crowded,â he continues. âIâm always happy to be in those surroundings. It was a fantastic night.â
This hard-bitten jazzman might prefer spontaneity to his set lists, but this latest live album nods to many of his countless career hits. Whether heâs opening with the deathless groove of âGive Me The Nightâ, revisiting fan favorites like âLove X Loveâ and âIn Your Eyesâ, or breathing fresh mojo into classic covers like Dave Bartholomewâs âI Hear You Knockingâ and Donny Hathawayâs âThe Ghettoâ, fans will undoubtedly love every minute of this performance.
Itâs been a long and winding road for George Benson. Now, on âWeekend In Londonâ, the same club that hosted that young hotshot back in the early-â70s welcomes back the older, wiser legend to burn down the house.
